Heel Pain (Plantar Fasciitis)

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition that affects the foot.  It is inflammation of the tendon that connects the toes to the heel. The tendon is known as plantar fascia.  This tendon helps support the arch of the foot and absorb shock while walking or running.

What are the symptoms?

Sharp pain and tenderness in the heel or the arch of the foot.  This may be felt first thing in the morning upon awakening and taking that first step.  Pain usually improves after moving but comes back after extended sitting or standing.  Tightness in the calf muscle can also be associated with plantar fasciitis.

What are the causes of plantar fasciitis?

Having repetitive stress or strain to the plantar fascia usually causes plantar fasciitis.  Stress or strain to the plantar fascia may be caused by:

1. Having flat feet or high arches

2. Working on hard surfaces such as concrete

3. Walking or standing too long on hard surfaces

4. Inadequate shoes with no arch support or cushion

5. Tight calf muscles

6. Being overweight may also add stress onto the foot

What are treatment options for plantar fasciitis?

Common treatments for plantar fasciitis include physical therapy, wearing proper shoe orthotics, receiving injections into the foot, surgery and medication are commonly prescribed to help alleviate the pain.  Applying ice to the area of pain or massaging with ice for 15 minutes may also be useful along with daily stretches to the plantar fascia.

At Peak Wellness Therapy, we provide care for plantar fasciitis.  We have our own unique way of treating your condition by addressing the cause of your foot pain, develop a conservative treatment plan to bring relief and helping you avoid future flare-ups.  We love working with other doctors or therapist to co-manage your condition if needed.  Give us a call today.
